Round Robin Tournaments on iOS

Run competitive, balanced tournaments with automatic matchmaking using the Nice Play iOS app.

What is a Round Robin Tournament?

A round robin ensures every player gets to play with and against everyone else in balanced teams. Nice Play automatically creates fair matchups based on skill levels.

Perfect for:

  • League play and tournaments
  • Ensuring everyone gets equal court time
  • Creating balanced teams automatically
  • Competitive play with skill-based matchups

Setting Up a Round Robin

Start by creating a regular event, then convert it to a round robin on the event page.

Step-by-step setup:

  1. Create an event

Tap the + button and fill in event details as usual

  2. Wait for players to join

You need at least 4 players to run a round robin

  3. Convert to round robin

Open your event → Tap "Setup Round Robin" button

  4. Configure settings

Choose courts available, match format, and scoring

  5. Generate matches

Tap "Generate Matches" to create balanced teams

Team Builder & Constraints

Control how teams are formed with skill balancing and pairing rules.

Automatic Skill Balancing

Nice Play uses player skill ratings to create evenly matched teams. Higher and lower skilled players are paired to balance out team strength.

Partner Constraints

Want two players to always play together? Add a "must pair" constraint. Need to keep players apart? Add a "never pair" constraint.

  • • Tap "Manage Constraints" in the round robin setup
  • • Select two players and choose constraint type
  • • The algorithm will respect these rules when generating teams

Manual Team Adjustments

After matches are generated, you can manually swap players between teams if needed. Tap on any match to edit teams.

Running the Tournament

Track scores in real-time and advance through rounds on your iPhone.

Recording Scores:

  1. Tap on a match to open the scorecard
  2. Enter the final score for each team

Multi-Round Tournaments:

  • • Once all matches in a round are complete, tap "Advance Round"
  • • Generate new matches with different pairings
  • • Scores accumulate across all rounds

  • • All players can see their rank and stats
  • • Tap "Complete Tournament" when finished to save final results

Tips for Successful Round Robins

⏱️ Plan your time

Each round takes 15-20 minutes per match. With 8 players on 2 courts, expect 30-40 minutes per round.

👥 Ideal player count

8-12 players works best. Too few and rotations are limited, too many and wait times increase.

🎯 Set clear rules

Decide on match format (games to 11? 15?) and scoring before starting. Post in event description.

📊 Update scores promptly

Have someone designated to enter scores right after each match finishes to keep things moving.

🔄 Use constraints wisely

Only add constraints when needed. Too many restrictions limit the algorithm's ability to balance teams.

🏆 Celebrate winners

Give props to top performers! The leaderboard shows who earned their victory.

Common Questions

What if someone drops out mid-tournament?

You can remove them from the event, then regenerate remaining matches. Previous scores will be preserved.

Can I edit a match after entering scores?

Yes! Tap on the match and update the score. The leaderboard will recalculate automatically.

How many rounds should we play?

2-3 rounds is typical. More rounds mean everyone plays together more, but tournaments take longer.

What if players don't have skill ratings?

The app will still balance teams, but encourage players to set their skill level in their profile for better matchups.
